[Predecessors explain the medicine]

“Compendium of Materia Medica”: Wei Rui, after carefully studying the main flavors of various schools, you will know that its nature is mellow and mild, so it can be used for a long time and has endless uses. Just as this medicine can nourish the five internal organs and nourish qi and blood, the root is cured and the remaining diseases are eliminated. Blood is yin and is responsible for maintaining the complexion, and qi is yang and is responsible for lightening the body. If the yin essence is insufficient, it will cause false heat; if the kidney qi is not solid, there will be bone atrophy and waist and leg pain; if the deficiency is inflammatory, there will be headaches and restlessness, eye pain and tears; if the deficiency is hot, there will be depression and thirst; if the upper part is strong and the lower part is weak, there will be cold in the stem, and even if it is five kinds of fatigue and seven kinds of injuries, the essence will dry up day by day, and it will become a deficiency. With one medicine, it can be used in many ways. If it is not for nourishing yin essence and increasing yang qi, how can it be like this? Looking at its strengths, it is probably similar to Huangjing. It is mainly used for wind and heat in stroke, inability to shake, muscle knots, dampness and poison, etc., all of which are used for female impotence, because the two substances are mixed into one in the “Ben Jing”.

“New Compilation of Materia Medica”: The nature of the impotence is pure, and its effect is very slow. It cannot save the emergency at the moment, and it must be taken more to be effective. It is difficult to use it in decoctions to expect a quick effect. Moreover, the impotence replenishes yin, and ginseng must be used to replenish yang, so that yin and yang have a wonderful balance, and the effect is really amazing. Therefore, for stroke, if the impotence is taken together with ginseng, there will be no worry of paralysis; for shock and mania, if the impotence is taken together with ginseng, there will be less pain of death. Ginseng is strengthened by impotence, and impotence is encouraged by ginseng.

“Compendium of Materia Medica”: Impotence is warm, sweet and mild, and a neutral product. If it is made into pills with honey and taken in several kilograms, it will have special effects, which is the same as taking Polygonum multiflorum and Rehmannia. If you only add a few grams to the decoction and think it can replace ginseng and astragalus, you are far from the truth. Generally speaking, this medicine has a slow nature and can only be effective after long-term use. It is mainly used for slow symptoms of rheumatism and asthenia. Therefore, Li Xian took it for food, Nanyang used it to treat wind-heat, and “Qianjin” and “Wai Tai” also used it occasionally, but never relied on it as a heavy dose. If it is an acute deficiency, ginseng and astragalus are necessary to restore the pulse and yang. At this time, even if you use a few pounds of Wei Rui, it cannot match the few grams of ginseng and astragalus. (If) because Li Shizhen said that it can replace ginseng and astragalus, whenever you encounter deficiency symptoms, you always add it, how can it benefit the patient at all?

“Ben Cao Bian Du”: Wei Rui is a moist product. It cultivates the yin of the lungs and spleen. It is its strength, but it seems that it cannot be effective for the treatment of wind-heat and wind-heat. It can also be used for those who are deficient. The nature, flavor and function of Polygonatum odoratum are similar to those of Polygonatum odoratum. It can be inferred that wind-heat syndrome is most likely to damage yin, and drugs that nourish yin are also easy to hinder evil. Only Polygonatum odoratum is sweet, mild and moist. Although it nourishes, it does not hinder evil. Therefore, the ancients took this into consideration when formulating prescriptions.

“Compendium of Materia Medica”: Polygonatum odoratum is sweet, oily and soft. Although “Compendium of Materia Medica” does not mention its coldness, it treats all dry and hot diseases. How cold is it (can be known). The ancients used it to treat wind-heat, because its softness and moistness can calm the wind. The cold yin nature cannot treat external wind evil. It is most suitable for diseases caused by burning heat evil and fire generating wind. Now it is only used to treat dryness and heat in the lungs and stomach, dryness of body fluids, thirst and dry throat, and it is especially effective for those with blazing stomach fire, dryness and thirst, and hunger easily after eating a lot. Qianjin and Zhu Gong believe that it is the main medicine for treating wind-heat. Wind disease is caused by internal heat, which generates wind. It is not caused by external factors, but the heat is the strongest and the body fluids are easily damaged. Therefore, Polygonatum odoratum is the main medicine. Zhen Quan said that if the head is uneasy, this thing should be added. It also refers to the headache caused by rampant liver fire and wind-yang disturbance. It is sweet, cold, soft and moist, which is the wonderful effect of calming wind and clearing fire. How can it be said that it can cure all headaches? The three words “various deficiencies” in Benjing summarize the above sentences about violent heat. Yin’an’s words are very true. It is the ancients who mistakenly thought that it refers to all kinds of deficiencies. Therefore, Zhen Quan said that it supplements the deficiency inside; Xiao Bing said that it supplements the middle and replenishes qi; Rihua said that it supplements the deficiency of five labors and seven injuries; Binhu said that it is mainly for spleen and stomach deficiency, frequent urination and loss of semen in men, all kinds of deficiency, and it is said that it can treat deficiency, cold and heat, and all kinds of deficiency symptoms, using Daishen and Qi, which are neither cold nor dry, and have great effects. It is almost regarded as a magic medicine for reviving fatigue and tuberculosis. Not knowing the soft and moist nature, the dominance of pure yin is enough to destroy the vitality of life. What’s more, the disease of asthenia is the deficiency of both yin and yang. Even if the virtual fire is raging, there is no way to directly analyze it with coldness. How can the yin, cold, greasy and stagnant nature be able to replenish the middle and benefit qi? The opinions of various scholars are all the fault of misreading the “Compendium of Materia Medica” which lacks three words.

Precautions for boiling Chinese herbal medicine:

1. The medicine pot must be cleaned

When boiling Chinese medicine, the medicine juice is concentrated due to evaporation of water, and a layer of medicine scale often accumulates at the bottom and around the medicine pot. If the medicine boiled in the medicine pot is often changed, and the accumulated medicine scale is not wiped off in time, the medicine scale will dissolve when the new medicine is boiled, interfering with and reducing the efficacy of the medicine, and even delaying the condition. Especially if highly toxic medicines or topical medicines that cannot be eaten have been boiled before, it may also cause poisoning.

In addition, if the medicine is not wiped clean in time after each boiling, the medicine scale at the bottom of the medicine pot will accumulate more and more, and it is easy to burn and lose the efficacy when boiling again.

2. Whether to cover or not depends on the medicine

Generally speaking, in order to make the Chinese medicine boil thoroughly, it is best to cover it. Especially for Chinese medicines containing volatile ingredients, such as mint, patchouli, perilla leaves, etc., they should be boiled in a short time to prevent the active ingredients from volatilizing. Some precious medicines, such as ginseng, deer antler, wolfberry, etc., so that the active ingredients can be fully released.

Some Chinese herbal medicines are light in weight and large in volume, such as Centella asiatica, Prunella vulgaris, White Tongcao, Loofah, Corn Hair, etc., so it is not suitable to cover the decocted, otherwise it will often overflow from the pot. You can open the lid for decocting, and stir at any time.

3. “Decoction thoroughly” and “dry”

“Decoction thoroughly” means to fully release the active ingredients of the medicine, which is the basic requirement for decocting medicine. For medicines with tough texture and difficult to release active ingredients at once, only by decocting separately, decocting first, decocting for a long time, etc., can the medicine juice be thick and the efficacy be fully exerted. Medicines with loose texture and light and fragrant nature and taste do not need to be decocted for too long; but herbs with light texture and large body should be stirred frequently to facilitate decoction.
